"다른 사람의 감정을 직감하는 기술(art of intuiting the emotions of others)" "성공과 행복에 필수적인 '육감'('sixth sense' indispensable for success and happiness)."

외국 언론에 소개되는 한국인들의 '눈치(Nunchi)'는 그다지 부정적이지 않다. 오히려 "변화하는 사교(社交)상의 정보를 재빨리 처리하는 능력(ability to quickly process changing social information)"이라며 긍정적으로 보는(look on the bright side) 시각이 많다.

"한국에선 어린 시절부터 체득하는 상황 인식 개념(concept of situational awareness)이다. 일종의 감성 지능(emotional intelligence)이다. 온갖 감각을 동원해 다른 사람의 몸짓·언어·표정 등으로 생각과 느낌을 즉시 가늠해(instantly gauge other people's thoughts and feelings) 분위기를 간파하는 재주(knack to read the room)다. 그래서 눈치는 "좋다"고 하지 않고 "빠르다"고 한다.

한국에선 어린 나이부터(from an early age) 눈치를 배운다. 주변 흐름을 감지해 그 분위기에 접속해야 한다는(be connected to their environment) 가르침을 끊임없이 받는다. 그래서 세 살이면 이미 남의 눈치를 본다(try to read others' minds). 부모가 아이에게 "너는 왜 그렇게 눈치가 없니"라고 나무라는 데는, 버릇없이 군다고 꾸중하는(scold for behaving rudely) 한편으로 "왜 주변 상황에 맞추지(plug into their surroundings) 못하느냐"는 안타까움이 배어 있다.

눈치는 전반적인 분위기를 살피면서(look at the general mood) 실시간으로 전후 사정과 역할을 상황에 따라 인식함으로써(be situationally aware of the context and roles in real time) 관계와 서열의 본질을 이해하는(understand the nature of relationships and hierarchies) 과정이다.

눈치가 빠른 사람들은 변화하는 주변의 사회적 정보를 잽싸게 포착한다(agilely capture changing social information around them). 그리고 자신이 유능하고 일에 열심인 것처럼 보이는 데(appear competent and engaged) 적절히 활용해 더 나은 사회생활로 이어지게(lead to a better social life) 한다.

눈치에도 장단점(upsides and downsides)이 있다. 부정적 측면은 차치하고(set its negatives aside) 긍정적인 쪽만 보자면, 눈치로 취득한 정보는 자신과 다른 모든 사람을 편안하게 해주는(make themselves and everybody else comfortable) 순기능을 하기도 한다. 한국 사회의 공손함과 존중(civility and respect)도 눈치에서 비롯된 것이다.
